One of my girl friends runs a highly visited website/message board related to my industry. She is the sole moderator for this board and she does a bang-up job.
Recently, there was a troll problem. She decided that she would give this persistent troll his very own thread, and move ALL of his past, present and future
posts into this one thread. She also announced that any new usernames that start trolling will get the same treatment. Since we all know that trolls are only
looking for disruption and attention (that they don't get in the real world), a strategy like this one kills their buzz, and restores order.

Pan: Thanks for keeping the peace.
You CAN be a strong conservative and not a troll. While the majority of posters here are of the liberal persuasion, there are a handful of conservatives whose comments get lost amid the screaming of one (?) loud voice. beowulf777 who, when speaking his republican beliefs, has to my knowledge never publicly attacked anyone who didn't attack him first. Don't get me wrong, I still think his beliefs are wrong, but the guy never started a fight here and doesn't deserve to be labeled with the "T" word.

A reminder:
If you bump your own thread once when no one else has commented, that will be tolerated; perhaps you had an additional thought. However, repeated bumps with no other contributions is considered talking to yourself and the thread will be closed. The rules apply to everyone, not just the troll. |

Mr. Moderator:
That mean ole Histrybuff is accusing me of trying to close his threads!!! He ran crying to his Mommy and said that he wasn't being treated fairly and that I was posting one-liners to exploit the rules of the board. He even posted his own thread on the situation after recess ended!! My Mommy says that since the threads haven't been closed yet, he's just a dizzy sourpuss who overreacts like Gladys Kravitz on my favorite TV show, "Bewitched"!!! Can you help? Thanks, Mr. Moderator.

vw,
You've been very naughty and I've had to close HB's thread as a result. Of course, HB should have resisted the urge to respond back and forth with you until someone else had entered the fray, making it a multi-party conversation. (But then, it might have fallen off page 1.) On further consideration, rather than close threads that have been marred by "Tinkerbell is actually Captain Hook" type entries, which could be used to close threads when one is losing the discussion, I think I will just delete the offending comment. And remember, certain individuals, I have been satisfied that Bertz is not everyone else, so any such comment or even the hint of such a comment will be deleted. Edited for spelling.

Thanks Mr. Moderator.
Sorry for being "naughty." My Mommy also said that she had changed her mind about that Histrybuff dude being like Gladys Kravitz, cause Gladys told the truth even though she was a nosy busybody. She said that Histrybuff was more like a lady called "Mrs. Danvers" in a movie called "Rebecca." I've never seen that one but my Dad heard what she said and he laughed and laughed cause Mrs. Danvers was supposed to be a twisted old closet case hag who told lots of lies and then got burned up at the end.

vw,
I hope you listened to your Mommy and will be a good boy from now on. I suspect your Mommy was right; Mrs Danvers was not a very nice person and we should all try to be nice people. (Miracles CAN happen, you know.) |

Is it too much to ask for a limit on first page authorships. Bambi's new tactic is to throw as much shit as possible against the wall, basically half of
all threads are authored by this one person on page one.

Let him author as much as he likes AS LONG AS NO ONE RESPONDS TO THE THREADS. As soon as people come on the forum and start responding to other threads, his
will fall off the page. And if he starts a whole bunch of threads with the same general topic, I'm sure one of the moderators will merge them all.

The problem is that if we are only allowed one thread per subject and Histrybuff flies down from his bat-infested belfry early in the AM and posts something
first, then we are caught between a rock and a hard place.
Can that rule be changed so we are not forced to post on his batty threads?

That is the option we are currently following. The problem is that we have difficulty with the merge power: some of us have it, some don't, and when the
power is there it often does not merge things the way we intended. Don't be surprised if several threads are merged and you get a message asking you to
re-title the thread.

Yes. What is going on in Iran is very important and warrants discussion and updates. However, numerous threads on the topic are way too many. I
("liquid") have closed all the threads but one (Obama Statement on
Iran) and have asked "solid" to merge into that thread all the threads that actually contribute to the discussion. I will continue to close any
new threads that are opened unless they are only tangentially related (as the thread on "America's mullahs" was).
Addendum. The comment preceding this was deleted because it contained a suggestion that one "individual" was another. The comment was about the numerous threads that were deleted this morning. Again, the rules apply to everyone. You may be the most popular poster on this forum, but if you break the rules your comment may be deleted or your thread locked/merged.

The rule restricting discussion of a topic to one thread has been dropped until such time as it is necessary again.

I have spent hours tracking down IP addresses and the identities associated with them, and I've barely scratched the surface. Some of the potential
alternate personae are popular posters on this and other fora. So, banning will be based on actions, not just being suspected of being a previously banned
troll. We will not tolerate accusing one persona of being another (especially dredging up past arguements to do so), posting
multiple threads on the same general topic just to dominate what appears on page one, bumping a thread to keep it at the top of page one by comments like
"bump", needless editing, or inane comments, or posting a rebuttal in a discussion that has nothing to do with the arguement that you supposedly are
rebutting. One such action will result in a public warning and a limitation of your posting rights. A second infraction and you will be banned.
Amateur troll killers out there, let us do the job; I think we have established that we can and will. |
