the one thing that congress does well is to get themselves re-elected. they are always thinking about the next election. much of the commentary i have read about the additional stimulus bill is that 2010 is an election year and the one thing incumbents fear is a bad economy and high unemployment (it's the economy stupid). if by the fall it looks like things are still in the tank and unemployment is still high and maybe still growing, watch for congress to spend like...

It won't happen, but they should finish spending the money called for in the current bill before passing another. After all, only a small portion of the money has actually been spent.

the stimulus bill was not "too little" becasue it was a spending bill not a stimulus bill. parts of the bill were stimulus but most of the bill was spending for non-stimulus things like transfer payments and creating a new government agency. even the stimulus part of the bill was wrong in that it was not "front loaded". the bill was wrong on all counts. it was like congress spent money on everything that it had been denied during the bush years and...

Yes, bigjoey, I too have my doubts. But even the best economists are have "doubts" rather than convictions. Was it too little? Too little regulation? New Yorker has an excellent article on FDIC chief Bair that addresses this issue (she has been correct more consistently than Geithner or any of the others from the banking community.) Krugman said it was too little, but now he's not that sure...after all, the stimulus is just starting to be felt and the unemployment part is a real...

It's the current American mentality of "I want what I want and I want it now". Obama never said there would be an overnight cure with the recovery package, that it would take months. So, a few months pass, things are no longer getting drastically worse daily (still not getting all that better, but not tanking daily), and people are screaming for instant recovery again.

i agree with you. the way to get a new congress is with term limits. there is no reason for these people to be there until they die. for example, kennedy and byrd in their current conditions are not effective and not doing their jobs. yes, acknowledge their decades of service but at some point, there does come a time to retire and bring in someone who can actually work. i do not want to debate how good or bad these two men were in the decades they were there but what they are...

We really need to get an ALL NEW CONGRESS that will stop spending and taxing like there's no tomorrow. From Clinton on all they have done is....let everyone think they were entitled to own a home....deregulate the banking laws so the wall street vultures could infect the financial markets and send us into a war that is costing billions. I don't know where the guy above got his graph, but here's one from the Washington Post, hardly a friend to PRESIDENT BUSH. This graph is based on independent CBO numbers, and came out before PRESIDENT OBAMA and his supporters rolled out a new health care plan that will add another trillion or so to the deficit pile over the next decade.

before congress gives us another stimulus bill, how about spending the last one. think about it a minute, if less than 10% of the first bill has been spent, the first bill is 90% still to come so the effect seen is only 10%. of course it is not working, it has not been deployed! that is why i said the original stimulus bill would fail as it was not timely. to get the full impact, it needed to be spent. i would not mind a new stimulus bill if all of the unspent money...

Pres. Obama's programs cost about 10% of what Pres. Bush's programs, exempting the wars, have cost the US.

People can bitch and moan about what the stimulus did or did not do...but the funds, IMO, helped the US avoid a major Depression and the naysayers should be grateful about that. Additionally, Paul Krugman thinks we need another BIGGER stimulus in the fall. See article from The NY Times below:
